Llangollen 2019 – Saints and Singers : The Music of Wales

l

Wales has a world-wide reputation for its choral music, and this evening will showcase the Land of Song at its very best. Supreme Welsh vocalists Shân Cothi (soprano) and Rhodri Prys Jones(tenor), along with the British Sinfonietta, will be joined by the combined forces of five local choirs to perform music by two royal composers; William Mathias CBE and Paul Mealor, as well as inspiring compositions by Arwel Hughes OBE and Morfydd Owen.

The audience will be treated to two rare opportunities: the premiere performance of a brand new work for tenor, chorus and orchestra by Dr Edward-Rhys Harry, and the not to be missed sheer majesty of the incredible cantata ‘Saint Teilo’ by William Mathias CBE.

The evening promises to be a tremendously dramatic celebration of traditional music from Wales, bursting with glorious melodies and powerful operatic choruses.

Llangollen 2019 – The Gipsy Kings – Featuring Andre Reyes

The Gipsy Kings are a salsa, pop and flamenco outfit hailing from the south of France, known for their energetic sets that feature infectious Latin rhythms, rousing vocals and virtuoso guitar playing. Their depth of heritage can be heard in the band’s eclectic sound, which draws from a variety of styles and traditions and reflects their Spanish Romani ancestry. Their music is a heady concoction of rumba, flamenco and salsa, described as “a crossroads where gypsy rhapsody and flamenco meets salsa funk”. As a result, their live shows are perfect for fans of Latin, world and contemporary pop music – and just about anybody who loves to dance.

Harmony vocals, flamboyant guitar strumming, and hand-claps; their music is warm, exuberant and hugely popular with trademark hits such as ‘Bamboleo’ and ‘Volare’. This is world music in the truest sense of the term, with a flair for making culturally rooted music accessible to diverse audiences they are sure to feel at home on our Eisteddfod stage.
